Upgrading WordPress
Upgrade, Wordpress No Comments »WordPress is constantly improving the WordPress software, and once tested make it available to all of us. Now, what does this all mean to you and what do you need to do…
Well, first of all, the process of upgrading your WordPress Software to the newest version is quite simple and easy. I will take you through the process step by step:
- Go to http://wordpress.org/download and download the current WordPress version;
- Once the download has completed, unzip the download;
- Go the folder of the unzipped WordPress file and select the folder wp-content;
- Under the folder ‘wp-content’, delete the themes folder;
- Go back to the main WordPress folder, and delete the file config-sample.php;
- Before uploading the new files to the server, it is recommended that you make a backup of your information. See post about backing up your files. (To be honest, I do not do a backup. Why, maybe being lazy and that until now that I have not encountered any problem. BUT if you are not sure, make a backup. I do not want to hear from anyone that I have told that you do not have to make a backup. WHEN YOU DECIDE NOT TO MAKE A BACKUP IS YOUR OWN DECISION AND RESPONSABILITY);
- The last step that you MUST undertake before you upload the new files to the server, is disabling all your plugins. This is really important, as some plugins may not function correctly with the new WordPress version. SO DEACTIVATE ALL PLUGINS BEFORE UPLOADING THE FILES.
- Now go to the FTP Manager and select on the server the folder where you have your WordPress installed;
- Select on your local drive NOT the folder but the files and subfolders of the new version of WordPress, and upload them to the server;
- Once the upload has been finished, open your webbrowser and type the following: yourdomainname/subfolder(if any)/wp-admin/upgrade.php/
- And follow the instructions;
- And that is it. Well done.
If you have any questions or doubts, let me know. Enjoy the new version of WordPress.
